After hiring internationally renowned basketball icon Dawn Staley as its women’s head coach for the 2008-09 season, the University of South Carolina sought ways to increase attention and attendance for its up-and-coming program. As part of the women’s basketball marketing plan, the Gamecocks called upon Starbridge Media Group to create a custom comic and activity book promoting a statewide literacy initiative highlighting the educational background of Coach Staley and the tenets of hard work and fair play. The resulting “Reading Heroes” comic book is a classic case of blending first-rate creative content with a strong marketing and community relations initiative to attract young fans and family.
